NAME
socket - create an end point for communication

       SYS$ASSIGN - Assign I/O channel

EXPLAINATION
The Digital UNIX socket system call provides functionality similar to
the OpenVMS SYS$ASSIGN system service. The socket system call will
create a communications endpoint and return the descriptor to that end‐
point. Sockets support a number of input and output system calls
including read, write, recvfrom, sendto, and others.
