NAME
       putenv - sets an environment variable

       SYS$CRELNT - Create logical name table

EXPLAINATION
       The  Digital  UNIX  putenv  function is somewhat similar to the OpenVMS
       SYS$CRELNT system service.  However, it is not possible to create a new
       environment,  the  calling process can only modify its environment with
       the putenv function.
