RED(4) BSD Programmer's Manual RED(4)NAMEred - 3Com Red (3C508) Ethernet interface
SYNOPSIS
red* at pnp?
DESCRIPTION
The red interface provides access to 10 Mb/s Ethernet networks. It sup-
ports the 3Com 3C508-series ISA bus cards. Since this card is only sup-
ported in Plug and Play mode, PnP must be enabled on the onboard EEPROM
for the board to be recognized.
The red interface employs the address resolution protocol described in
arp(4) to dynamically map between Internet and Ethernet addresses on the
local network.
MEDIA SELECTION
Media selection is performed by ifconfig(8) keywords. The boot-up default
is 10baseT or BNC mode (in that priority order).

BUGS
These cards are not recommended for high-performance applications.
The 3C508 series of adapters may interfere with 3C509B ISA EtherLinkIII
adapters. This can be circumvented by configuring the 3C509B boards to
use PnP instead of the regular ISA activation mechanism. Use of 3C508
boards in combination with 3C509 boards that do not use PnP is not sup-
ported.
HISTORY
The red driver first appeared in BSD/OS.
