devnm(1M)

devnm -- device name

Synopsis

/usr/sbin/devnm [name . . .]

Description

The devnm command identifies the special file associated with the locally mounted disk file system where the argument name resides. One or more names can be specified.

devnm does not identify the special file on memfs filesystems, under ODM, or on other pseudo-filesystems.

Files

/dev/dsk/*

/dev/rdsk/*

/etc/devnm.path

/etc/mnttab

/usr/lib/locale/locale/LC_MESSAGES/uxcore.abi
language-specific message file (see LANG on environ(5))

Usage

The devnm command is most commonly used by the brc command to construct a mount table entry for the root device. devnm uses the file /etc/devnm.path to determine the device search path. The default entries in this file are /dev/dsk and /dev/rdsk.

Examples

The command:

/usr/sbin/devnm /home

produces:

   /dev/dsk/c0b0t0d0s3 /home
if /home is mounted on /dev/dsk/c0b0t0d0s3.
